“….He has filled the hungry with good things…” Luke 1:53
The original Mustard Seed Bookshop & Coffee Shop opened in 1988, offering both physical refreshment and spiritual nourishment, by way of Bibles, Christian books and gifts.
Operating initially from just one room in the previously owned Dewars Whisky Headquarters on Glasgow Road, Mustard Seed developed into a fully stocked Christian bookstore and separate coffee shop within larger rooms on the same premises. As more people experienced the quality food, value for money and friendly atmosphere, the word grew and we saw an increasing volume of customers.
In late 2007, early 2008, we moved into what had been the local Lidl supermarket, newly acquired and renovated, and the new National Christian Outreach Centre was opened. The Mustard Seed Coffee Shop, Book & Gift Shop had a dedicated space at the front of our new premises and to our surprise quickly became one of the most popular stops for coffee shop clientele in Perth. The book shop continued to be known for its quality Christian content.
The Mustard Seed was formally recognised by the Scottish Tourist Board in 2019 and awarded a four star accreditation in recognition of excellent standards of facilities and services, and the promotion of locally sourced quality food and drink.
We prioritise equal access for all, offering wheelchair access and providing wheelchairs on-site. We also have a quiet overflow area (when available), a well-equipped disabled toilet with baby changing facilities, trained first aiders and a defibrillator on hand.
During the pandemic of 2020 the Mustard Seed had to close but we were invited by the Perth and Kinross Council to operate as a Community Hub in the city. Our kitchen teams continued to operate, producing some 500+ meals per week which were distributed to needy families. We also took the opportunity to completely refurbish the coffee shop, giving it a fresh look and feel.
Our vision remains unchanged – to provide the best service possible for our customers, to promote Scottish produce and to support our local community in practical ways with God’s love
Jesus said “The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field. It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.”
Just as the mustard seed is the smallest of seeds which grows into something much larger, it is our desire and prayer that in some small way we may encourage our customers’ faith in God to grow, and their understanding of the love of Jesus Christ to become real and meaningful; that these ‘seeds’ would blossom into something greater in the lives of those who visit us.
